From Haiti.- How is everyone doing! Here we are fine. It is raining almost every day on the evenings which is good for the country and its agriculture. Furthermore, coming from Phoenix Arizona, it will be always enjoyable seeing so much water falling from the sky.

Regarding the work side, I think we are doing fairly well. I am part of a team (Economic Opportunities Development) having as main objective to boost the private sector in the country. We tried to understand first the right meaning of doing business in Haiti; the real importance of micro, medium, midsize, and big businesses. It is quite different! Even comparing with other emerging markets, there is some work to do to put Haiti on the “business track.” The concept of: opportunity, resources, management, product/service, marketing, customer/client, profit, growth is reduced to “let’s live today, tomorrow will do its part.” The Haitian economy is an economy of subsistence, so is business here.

Our job is to support financially a few of the small and medium size businesses to enhance their productivity, promote a business networking, and create the value chain. It seems that the strategy is to put the adequate structure in the field office of Port-au-Prince, launch the program, and then use the Port-au-Prince’s experience to create the same thing in the other four field offices. For the moment, we have done most part of the structure putting together the different internal stakeholders involved in the process, creating the necessary tools (paper work), and identifying the beneficiaries. The program should be launched shortly.

Notes from MWB-Haiti! It is true that we are working in several fronts at the same time but the panorama is better defined now.

Micro grant.- We have designed this tool to help graduating vocational or professional students from disadvantage areas to think about their professional-business lives, and build a basic professional development plan. We give them a kit of tools which, besides their planning, will arm them to enter the market right after graduation. Launched already! The 113 first beneficiaries of this project will receive their respective kits by July 15th.

Small grant.- This was created to support the small businesses. Its main objective is to make the business owners thinking business. We assist them to build a business plan for their business; to enhance their involvement in the wellbeing of their community; and increase their commitment with the safety of the environment. They receive a small subvention (up to 50000USD) which will be matched. With the total amount (CHF subvention and their matching contribution) they finance an implementation project to boost their business and create more jobs.

The Fishermen Association.- 200 men subsist with their family basically from the sea products. We are assisting them to plan their business, make it more productive, and link it to the market.

Animal Production.- A community in one of those vulnerable areas (Morne Hopital) of Port-au-Prince has expressed to us its will to get into the production animal business. There are already grouped in associations, have some experience in this business, have the lands and some raw materials. With our assistance they are building their business.

Other activities.- We are meeting different actors in the big, medium and small private sector to link them and create the value chain. We are also partnering with the national and local government, other groups in the civil society, and NGOs to help in development, infrastructure works, and also create that indispensable synergy to take this country to the next level.
